Forlan leads Atletico to Europa League glory

Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Diego Forlan scored in the 116th minute to help Atletico Madrid to a 2-1 win over Fulham in extra time in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Forlan put the Spanish side ahead after 32 minutes but had his opener canceled out five minutes later by Simon Davies.

Following a scoreless second half, Atletico nearly took the lead through Sergio Aguero in the first half of extra time, but Aguero set up the winning goal for Forlan, which allows Atletico to return to the Europa League next season.

Forlan was a constant threat throughout the match and he nearly put his team ahead in the 11th minute when he struck the post from 10 yards.

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had to be alert to keep out a free kick from Jose Antonio Reyes minutes later, but he couldn't prevent Forlan from finding the back of the net in the 32nd minute.

Aguero badly scuffed a volley attempt from the top of the penalty area but the ball fell neatly into the path of the Uruguayan, and he redirected it past Schwarzer.

However, the English side needed just five minutes to pull level again as a deflected cross from Zoltan Gera found an open Davies at the back post and he volleyed the ball past goalkeeper David De Gea from close range.

Forlan had a chance to restore the lead right before halftime when his shot was saved at the bottom left corner, while De Gea produced a good reaction save on the hour mark to deny a first-time shot from Davies.

Both sides seemed content to go to extra time as the game wore on, and Aguero missed a glorious chance to put Atletico ahead in the extra session when he poked a shot wide from a few yards out.

However, the Argentine atoned for his miss by setting up the winning goal when he drove a low cross to the front of the net from the left wing, allowing Forlan to redirect the ball into the far corner with a neat flick off his heel.
