Cardiff, Wales (Sports Network) - Wales named Chris Coleman its new manager on Thursday, following the death of former coach Gary Speed in November.
Coleman, 41, played 42 times for Wales from 1992-2002, and was a teammate with Speed for the majority of that time. Speed, who committed suicide, played with Wales from 1990-2004. He was 42.
Speed took Wales to three wins in its final four Euro 2012 qualifying matches, but the country has not qualified for the Euro or World Cup finals since 1958. Wales moved from outside the top 100 in FIFA's rankings to 48th last year. The country slipped one spot in the latest rankings released Wednesday.
Coleman played for Swansea City, Crystal Palace, Blackburn and Fulham, but his career was cut short following a car crash. He coached Fulham from 2003-07 and later had stints at Real Sociedad, Coventry City, and Larissa in Greece.
