. HOLDERS Linfield safely made it through to the sixth round of the JJB Sports Irish Cup with victory over Carnegie First Division leaders Loughgall at Lakeview Park.
But it took the Blues until the third minute of the second half to take the lead when Peter Thompson made the most of an error by Villagers 'keeper Marc Robinson before doubling up on 71 minutes with Thomas Stewart completing the scoring six minutes from time. David Jeffrey's side will entertain another First Division side - Bangor - in the next round after Paul Millar's Seasiders came from behind to knock out Glenavon at Mourneview Park. The Lurgan Blues - who announced the appointment of former Northern Ireland great Terry Cochrane as their new manager just before kick-off - moved in front on 16 minutes when Trevor Molloy turned home a David Bracken flick only for Bangor to level on the stroke of half-time courtesy of a Marty Verner penalty. And a Stephen Munn free-kick a quarter-of-an-hour from the end saw them pull off the shock of the day to earn that trip to the international stadium. Beaten finalists last season Dungannon Swifts earned a second bite of the cherry following a draw away to Limavady United. The Swifts briefly led through a Mark McAllister goal on 78 minutes before Barry Curran burst into the area just 90 seconds later to level for the Roesiders. The winner of that tie will face either Glentoran or Lisburn Distillery in the next round following their scoreless draw at The Oval. There'll be another all Premier League clash in the sixth round after the draw paired Cliftonville with their north Belfast neighbours Crusaders. The Reds had a narrow escape away to Larne after racing into a two-goal first half lead through George McMullan and Francis Murphy only for Larne to recover thanks to Aaron Black and Kyle Moran. However Eddie Patterson's eventually progressed thanks to a late Chris Scannell winner. There were no such anxieties for the Crues though. They swept aside Armagh City 5-1 at Holm Park with two goals apiece coming from Seamus Brown and Eamon Doherty with David Rainey grabbing the fifth. City's late consolation came via Gary Fitzpatrick. Newry City and Ballymena United produced a four goal thriller at The Showgrounds. City moved in front early on when United defender Johnny Flynn knocked the ball past his own 'keeper whilst attempting to clear a Chris Morgan cross. The visitors levelled on 29 minutes, however, though Simon Kelly before Kevin Kelbie edged them in front early in the second half. But Newry earned a replay on Tuesday night when Morgan grabbed his first goal from the club from the edge of the area in the 58th minute. Dundela await the victors after their 4-0 trouncing of Portstewart at Wilgar Park thanks largely to a Matt Burrows hat-trick. Coleraine narrowly crept past Tobermore United at The Showgrounds as a result of David Patton's 54th minute thriller while Portadown left it even later - the 77th minute to be exact - to defeat Amateur League opponents Newington YC at Shamrock Park. There were no such scoring difficulties for Institute, though, as they hit Dunmurry Rec. for six at Drumahoe. Declan Divin grabbed a couple with Ryan McCreadie, David Ogilby, Andy Crawford and Philip Lowry also scoring to ensure a sixth round tie with either Ballyclare Comrades and Ballymoney United who finished scoreless at Dixon Park. And Donegal Celtic made it safely through at the expense of Carrick Rangers after a Paul McVeigh double added to Stephen McAlorum's opener. Elsewhere, Abbey Villa came from two goals down to defeat Banbridge Town at Crystal Park, Ards and Brantwood equally shared the goals at Clandeboye while Downpatrick edged out Killyleagh YC.
