Inter restores four-point lead with Atalanta win

Sun 6th, April 2008

Bergamo, Italy (Sports Network) - Inter Milan regained its four-point advantage on Roma on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Atalanta at Stadio Azzurri D'Italia.

Patrick Vieira scored in the 21st minute to put Inter in front before 17 year- old Mario Balotelli tallied in the 74th minute to secure the win.

Roma had cut Inter's lead to one point after beating Cagliari 3-2 on Saturday, but Vieira's first-half goal helped to alleviate those worries.

There was not much happening in the opening 20 minutes but a corner kick from Dejan Stankovic allowed Vieira to get into the box and smash a header past Atalanta goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola.

Inter had a goal called back for offsides, but they were in control as the teams headed into halftime.

The home side came out stronger in the second half and they created a few chances in the first 10 minutes, but they failed to take any of them due to poor finishing in the final third.

Inter regained control as the match wore on and they put the game out of reach in the 74th minute when Julio Cruz played a good ball over the top for Balotelli, who collected the pass and rounded Coppola before sliding the ball into the empty net.

Third-place Juventus fell 3-2 to Palermo as Mattia Cassani scored the winner in the 89th minute. Amauri scored two goals in the first half to put Palermo up 2-0, but Alessandro Del Piero bagged two goals of his own in the second half for Juventus, which is now only two points ahead of Fiorentina for third place.

Fiorentina retained its four-point lead on AC Milan for fourth place as the Viola downed Reggina 2-0. Udinese slipped to seventh place after being held to a 1-1 draw by Siena, while Sampdoria jumped into sixth after knocking off Livorno 2-0.

Empoli moved out of last place by beating Torino 1-0 on Ighli Vannucchi's goal in the 88th minute, while Catania Calcio moved three points clear of the drop zone with a 3-0 victory over Napoli and Parma moved one point from the relegation zone by earning a 2-2 draw with Lazio.
