Fiorentina tries to slow streaking Roma

Fri 5th, February 2010

Florence, Italy (Sports Network) - Fiorentina will try to reverse its fortunes in Serie A on Sunday when they play host to high-flying Roma at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

The Viola started the season with four wins from their first six games and looked to be genuine title contenders. They advanced to the Round of 16 in the Champions League after winning their group, and they are still involved in the Coppa Italia.

However, the team has seen its form suffer in recent weeks, and after winning just two of its last six games in Serie A, the club finds itself in 11th place.

Fortunately for manager Cesare Prandelli and his team they are only three points back of sixth-placed Palermo, which holds the final European spot. But there is a chance that taking part in multiple competitions this late into the season can take its toll.

"We will try to take each game as it comes. We are proud to say we are busy on three fronts," Prandelli told reporters following his team's 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semifinal matchup.

"At the moment, it's the psychological side that most worries me. We have to rediscover enthusiasm for our way of playing, knowing that we might face counter-attacks, but we might score too."

The mental aspect has to be taxing with such a busy fixture list, but Roma also knows a thing or two about fighting on multiple fronts, as they too are involved in Europe and the Coppa Italia in addition to Serie A.

The capital club has moved into the last 32 in the Europa League, and after Thursday's 2-0 victory against Udinese in the first leg of their domestic cup semifinal, it appears as though Claudio Ranieri's men have one foot through the door into the final.

Roma is currently the hottest team in Serie A as they bring an 18-game unbeaten streak in all competitions into the weekend, which has helped them climb to third in the league standings, level on 41 points with second-placed AC Milan and eight points back of leaders Inter.

Both sides will be missing a key defender for the contest on Sunday as Nicolas Burdisso misses out for Roma through suspension, while Fiorentina's Felipe is also out due to a ban.

Inter will return to the league after their match with Parma last weekend was postponed due to snow, and they will host Cagliari, while Milan visits Bologna.

Napoli continues its push for a top-four spot when they travel to Udinese, struggling Juventus invades Livorno, and Parma squares off with Palermo at the Renzo Barbera Stadium.

Second-from-the-bottom Atalanta meets up with Bari, Chievo travels to Genoa, Lazio plays host to Catania and Sampdoria hits the road to face Siena.
