Livorno holds Juventus to 1-1 draw

Sat 6th, February 2010

Livorno, Italy (Sports Network) - Antonio Filippini scored his first goal of the Serie A season, and Livorno built on its draw against AC Milan at San Siro last week with a 1-1 draw against Juventus on Saturday.

Filippini bagged Livorno's lone goal in the 26th, and the struggling side held on for a draw in another battle against one of Italy's giants, as it continues to battle relegation.

Livorno moved three points out of the drop zone, while Juve continues its drop down the standings and is now sixth. Juve, which got its lone goal from Nicola Legrottaglie, has just one win in its last eight.

Livorno opened the scoring in the 26th when Filippini headed home from close range. Luigi Vitale sent a cross from the right into the penalty area and the defensive midfielder charged in between two Juve defenders to score into the left side.

Juve answered before half when Diego picked out Legrottaglie with a free kick. Diego, who joined Juve in the offseason from Werder Bremen, drove a long pass from near midfield and Legrottaglie raced in to head home inside the left post from eight yards.

Livorno and Juve both struggled to create chances in the second half, but the hosts finally put Juventus goalie Gianluigi Buffon under pressure in the 72nd. Nico Pulzetti drove to the left end line and slipped a pass to Filippini, but a second goal was not on tap as he fired off target.

Juventus was forced to play a man down following the 82nd when Felipe Melo was handed his second yellow card, but Livorno managed to test Buffon just once in the final eight minutes and five minutes of extra time.

Davide Moro drove a right-footed shot from outside the area toward the bottom- left corner in the 89th off pass from Filippini, but Buffon was there to make the save.

Davide Marchini had another chance for Livorno in the last seconds of stoppage time, but he passed up two possible left-footed shots to set up his right, and Juve closed the space both times to deflect both shots.

Also Saturday, Fabio Simplicio scored in the 87th minute as Palermo beat Parma 2-1. Edison Cavani also scored for Palermo, which took advantage of Juve's tie to move into fifth place. Jonathan Biabiany scored for Parma.

On Sunday, Inter Milan hosts Cagliari, Bologna hosts AC Milan, Atalanta hosts Bari, Lazio hosts Catania, Genoa hosts Chievo, Udinese hosts Napoli, Siena hosts Sampdoria, and Fiorentina hosts Roma.
