Sanchez out after 16 months in charge of Mexico

Wed 2nd, April 2008

Mexico City, Mexico (Sports Network) - Mexico manager Hugo Sanchez is out after only 16 months in charge of the Mexican National Team.

"By a unanimous decision, the contractual relationship with the technical staff of the national team has been ended," Mexico Football Federation general secretary Decio de Maria told a news conference.

The decision comes only two weeks after Mexico's under-23 team, which Sanchez also coaches, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in August.

Jesus Ramirez will take over on an interim basis for the team's friendly against China next month in the United States. Ramirez guided the Mexican team that captured the World Under-17 championship in Peru in 2005.

Sanchez took over in November 2006 and was in charge of the national team for 23 full internationals, winning 12 games and losing eight with three draws.

However, the final straw appears to be the under-23 team's Olympic failure, which saw the team fail to qualify after finishing behind Canada and Guatemala in their group.
