Mexico advances to World Cup

Sat 10th, October 2009

Mexico City, Mexico (Sports Network) - Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored the first of three late goals for Mexico, sparking his nation to a 4-1 win over El Salvador on Saturday that secured a berth in next year's World Cup.

El Salvador's Marvin Gonzalez handed Mexico the lead in the 26th minute on an own goal, and Blanco's 71st-minute strike was followed by goals from Francisco Palencia and Carlos Vela at Azteca Stadium.

Mexico, which wraps up qualifying Wednesday at Trinidad and Tobago, can finish no worse than third in CONCACAF. The top three teams automatically advance and the fourth-place team faces a playoff against a South American team.
