Monterrey, Mexico (Sports Network) - Tigres notched three second-half goals on Sunday to clinch the 2011 Mexican Apertura title with a 3-1 win over Santos at the Estadio Universitario.
Oribe Peralta had put Santos in front in the 31st minute, but Tigres responded after the break with goals from Hector Mancilla, Danilinho, and Alan Pulido in the 52nd, 63rd, and 87th minutes to claim the title, 4-1, on aggregate.
Santos played down a man for much of the match after Oswaldo Sanchez was sent off in the 12th minute for committing a foul in the box that denied a goal- scoring opportunity. Tigres captain Lucas Lobos took the ensuing penalty kick but missed, keeping the second leg scoreless early on.
Israel Jimenez of Tigres and Felipe Baloy of Santos were also given their marching orders in the 69th minute after a small fracas.
Tigres finished the Apertura regular season in third place, one spot ahead of Santos. The title coup marks the first time that Tigres has secured the Primera Division championship since the 1981-82 season.
