Toluca, Mexico (Sports Network) - Ivan Alonso scored twice and Toluca defeated U.A.G., 3-1, on Sunday to emerge from the opening week of the Mexican Clausura season atop the standings.
Five teams kicked off the new season with wins, but Alonso's brace in a three- goal second half at the Estadio Nemesio Diez helped Toluca - which ended 13th in the Apertura - claim first place.
Alonso scored in the 57th and 80th minutes, around a goal from Edgar Duenas, as Toluca held on despite a late goal from U.A.G.'s Fredy Bareiro. Puebla and Atlas tied 0-0 in Sunday's other match.
Walter Ayovi's brace lifted Monterrey to a 2-1 victory over Jaguares, Cristian Benitez and Juan Medina scored as America downed Queretaro 2-0, Michael Arroyo scored as Atlante won at Guadalajara 1-0, and Jehu Chiapas gave San Luis a 1-0 win over UNAM, as the four Saturday winners ended the first week with a share of the lead.
Also Saturday, Apertura champion Tigres needed a goal from Lucas Lobos in the 70th minute to tie Cruz Azul 1-1, and Santos and Pachuca tied 0-0. On Friday, Jose Sand converted a penalty kick late in the first half as Tijuana was able to open the season with a 1-1 draw at Morelia.
