Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Real Madrid clinched their 31st Spanish title with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Osasuna on Sunday.
With second placed Villarreal winning earlier in the day and defender Fabio Cannavaro being ejected at the beginning of the second half, it looked like long odds to clinch the title with three matches still to play. The odds got longer when Osasuna midfielder Patxi Punal scored a penalty kick goal after a handball in the box to go up 1-0.
But playing down a man and down a goal, the back-to-back champions got goals from Arjen Robben and Gonzalo Higuain in the last four minutes to clinch the game and the league title.
"This team demonstrated that it has guts, determination - everything," Real president Ramon Calderon told Canal Plus television.
In other league action on Sunday, it was: Levante 1, Espanyol 1; Sevilla 2, Real Valladolid 0; Mallorca 2, Athletic Bilbao 1; Almeria 1, Real Betis 1; Racing 3, Real Murcia 2; Villarreal 2, Getafe 0; Barcelona 6, Valencia 0.
