Atletico moves closer to Champions League berth

Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan scored as Atletico Madrid defeated Espanyol, 2-0, on Thursday in Spain's La Liga to move back up to fourth.

Atletico slipped to fifth Wednesday when Sevilla defeated Racing, 3-0. But the club got goals from Aguero and Forlan three minutes apart in the first half to move back in to a Champions League qualifying spot.

Sevilla, which had 58 points entering Thursday's game and led Atletico on goal differential, fell three points back in fifth.

Atletico also pulled within three points of third-place Barcelona. Barca lost to Real Madrid on Wednesday, 4-1.

Aguero scored his 18th goal in La Liga this season in the 27th minute. Forlan doubled the lead in the 30th minute with his 15th goal of the season.

Atletico hosts Deportivo on Sunday with a chance to lock up a Champions League berth. Sevilla visits Real Betis on Sunday but if it fails to win and Atletico takes three points at home, the battle will be over.

Sevilla currently has a one-goal edge in differential.

The entire league returns to action Sunday.

In the other games, Barcelona hosts Mallorca, Osasuna hosts Real Murcia, Real Valladolid hosts Getafe, Athletic Bilbao hosts Racing, Levante hosts Valencia, Almeria hosts Recreativo, Villarreal hosts Espanyol and Real Zaragoza hosts Real Madrid.
