Benzema set to sign for Real Madrid

Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Lyon have confirmed that striker Karim Benzema is set to complete a move to Real Madrid for an initial fee of $50 million.

The 21-year-old had initially stated his intent to stay put with the French club for another season, but will now seal a switch to the Bernabeu which could eventually be worth $58 million to Lyon.

A statement on the French club's official website read: "A few days ago Karim Benzema informed president Jean Michel Aulas of his wish to join Real Madrid as soon as possible.

"The player wished to seize the opportunity offered to him by Real Madrid to be one of the major elements of its new ambitious policy, centered around some of the world's best players.

"Lyon accepted the decision of Karim Benzema and negotiated the conditions of a transfer which bring satisfaction to all parties."
