Valverde out as Villarreal boss

Villarreal, Spain (Sports Network) - Villarreal have sacked coach Ernesto Valverde in the wake of the 2-0 home defeat to Osasuna which left the club 10th in the La Liga table.

Valverde replaced Manuel Pellegrini last summer but has presided over a disappointing campaign which started poorly, and despite an improvement in form, looks set to finish with the Yellow Submarine in mid-table mediocrity.

It is not good enough for the club's board that has become used to securing European football in the last few years.

A statement on the club website read: "Villarreal have canceled their contract with coach Ernesto Valverde after the defeat picked up at El Madrigal against Osasuna.

"In the hope of confirmation of a new coach, the club thank the coach from Extremadura for his services and wish him the best of luck in his sporting career."
