Valencia's Mathieu could miss three months

Valencia, Spain (Sports Network) - Valencia has been handed a cruel blow with the news Jeremy Mathieu will be out of action for up to three months.

The former Toulouse full-back underwent surgery on torn ankle ligaments he suffered in the recent Europa League last-32 first-leg 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge at the weekend.

Following the news, the 26-year-old is expected to sit out for the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to reporters on his release from hospital, he said: "I'm only focused on getting back to 100 percent fitness as soon as possible.

"What would really make me happy now would be for Valencia to overturn the 1-0 result against Brugge on Thursday in order to get through.

"I know the players will be giving their all in order to achieve this."
