Atletico blasts short-handed Valencia

Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Diego Forlan scored twice and Atletico Madrid overcame an early deficit to blast short-handed Valencia 4-1 on Sunday at the Vicente Calderon,

David Silva scored to put third-place Valencia in the lead in the 20th minute, but a red card to Carlos Marchena in the 30th was followed a penalty kick goal from Forlan and Madrid added three more goals in the second half.

Miguel was also ejected for Valencia, which is 15 points behind La Liga leader Barcelona and 13 points off the pace of second-place Real Madrid.

Atletico, which has struggled all season, is still in the bottom half but made a jump up to 11th.

Forlan converted the penalty after Marchena played the ball with his hand just inside the area, and Sergio Aguero - who drew the penalty - fired Madrid into the lead in the 78th.

Miguel was sent off in the 83rd, and Forlan put the match away three minutes later. Jose Jurado capped the victory in the 90th.

Fourth-place Sevilla also let the leaders slip further away as it settled for a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Sevilla also played short-handed after Ndri Romaric was sent off in the 52nd.

Fifth-place Mallorca picked up ground on Valencia and Sevilla with a 2-1 win over Valladolid at Estadio Jose Zorrilla. Ruben Gonzalez and Julio Alvarez scored in the final 25 minutes as Mallorca rallied for the win.

Also Sunday, Joseba Llorente scored as Villarreal edged Deportivo 1-0, Diego Castro Gimenez scored in the 81st as Sporting Gijon edged Osasuna 3-2, Mario Bermejo scored in the 76th as Xerez tied Espanyol 1-1, and Fernando Soriano and Albert Crusat scored as Almeria beat Racing 2-0.
