Real Madrid extends winning streak with big second half

Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Real Madrid extended its La Liga winning streak to nine games on Saturday with a 3-1 comeback win over Sporting Gijon at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Following a scoreless first half, David Barral stunningly put the visitors in front in the 53rd minute, but Real rallied to score three times in a 13-minute span with Rafael Van der Vaart, Xabi Alonso and Gonzalo Higuain each finding the net.

The result moves Real three points clear of second-placed Barcelona with the Catalan side set to face Real Zaragoza on Sunday.

Neither goalkeeper was tested in the first half, but it was Real that came close to opening the scoring in the opening minute of the second half as Van der Vaart headed the ball over the net from close range following a good cross from Higuain.

Sporting Gijon lost 7-1 at Madrid last season, but they went in front in the 53rd minute when a chip over the top allowed Barral to track down the ball inside the penalty area and hammer a shot past goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

But the home side responded within two minutes as Cristiano Ronaldo's powerful free kick was parried into the path of Van der Vaart, who easily finished it off.

Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo Colinas made a good save on Marcelo two minutes later, but Alonso was on hand to put Real in the lead when Ronaldo flicked on a corner kick for the former Liverpool man to nod home.

Higuain then scored 22 minutes from time to seal the win as he charged through the middle of the Sporting defense and fired a shot into the corner of the net.

Last-placed Xerez claimed their fourth win of the season as they downed Tenerife, 2-1, Valladolid pulled off a 2-0 upset win over Deportivo, Pedro Leon's goal in the 86th minute allowed Getafe to earn a 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao, while fourth-placed Sevilla suffered a 2-0 defeat to Espanyol as Pablo Osvaldo scored a goal in each half.
