Sevilla set for La Liga clash with Atletico

Fri 1st, October 2010

Seville, Spain (Sports Network) - Sevilla stumbled in La Liga last week, but a huge victory at Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League on Thursday boosted the club's confidence ahead of Sunday's league match against Atletico Madrid.

Sevilla was unbeaten in its first four La Liga games, but fell victim to giant killers Hercules, which has also beaten Barcelona this season. Sevilla changed focus to Dortmund this week and earned a huge result in Germany.

"We put our lives on the line to win and stay in the game in the Europa League. It was difficult but we managed in the end," Diego Perotti said after the 1-0 victory.

"We knew that we had to win, we didn't take anything for granted and we worked to win and in the end that is what we got."

Now, an early-season showdown with Atletico will go a long way in determining if either side will challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona for the league title.

Atletico Madrid visits the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on the heels of a fortunate 1-1 draw against Germany's Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League. Simao scored the lone goal for Atletico on a penalty kick following a questionable call.

But with just one loss in La Liga, to Barcelona 2-1 in mid-September, Atletico is playing nearly as well as Madrid's other club, Real. Atletico is one point behind Real, which is two points behind leaders Valencia.

Real won its second straight in the Champions League on Tuesday, 1-0, against France's Auxerre, but the team's last La Liga match was a 0-0 draw at Levante.

Real hosts Deportivo, which is one of just two winless teams left in La Liga, on Sunday. Real's Alvaro Arbeloa believes the club can't overlook Deportivo at the Bernabeu.

"A game can never be predicted. We want to win against Deportivo and hopefully we will have a bit more luck scoring goals than in recent matches," Arbeloa said.

"We shouldn't let them score if we want to win the game, so we must have a solid defense. We find defense a very important aspect in our game and lately we are doing a good job."

Barcelona, one point behind Valencia on 12 points, hosts Mallorca on Sunday at the Camp Nou. Barca settled for a 1-1 draw at Rubin in the Champions League on Wednesday, but welcomed Lionel Messi back to the lineup.

Messi missed a few matches with an ankle injury, but returns to boost the team in La Liga and the group stage of the Champions League.

On Saturday, Valencia will try to extend its lead atop the standings when it hosts Athletic Bilbao, Real Zaragoza hosts Sporting Gijon, and Real Sociedad hosts Espanyol.

Also Sunday, Getafe hosts Hercules, Villarreal hosts Racing, Almeria hosts Malaga, and Osasuna hosts Levante.
