Johannesburg, South Africa (Sports Network) - The Netherlands and Spain are scoreless through 45 minutes of the FIFA World Cup final at Soccer City Stadium on Sunday.
Spain threatened a few times in the early going and nearly took the lead inside of five minutes from a free kick as Sergio Ramos turned a powerful header on goal from the middle of the penalty area that Dutch goalkeeper Martin Stekelenburg did well to parry.
David Villa then had a volley go close from a Xabi Alonso cross, while Arjen Robben's low shot in first-half stoppage time needed to be pushed past the post by Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
The two teams combined for five yellow cards in the opening 45 minutes, with Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong being a bit lucky to still be on the field after he spiked Alonso in the chest midway through the half.
