Independence downs magicJack to reach WPS final

Chester, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Independence booked a place in the Women's Professional Soccer final on Saturday with a 2-0 win over magicJack at PPL Park.

Tasha Kai opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half, while Amy Rodriguez doubled the advantage 10 minutes from time, sending Philadelphia into the final against the Western New York Flash next Saturday.

Christen Press had two scoring chances for magicJack in the first half with the first arriving in the 31st minute when her long-range effort was tipped over the crossbar by Independence goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

A few minutes later, Press had Barnhart beaten with a shot from eight yards, only to see it come back off the post.

The home side created few scoring opportunities in the first half, but things started quickly after the restart with Kai collecting a failed clearance near the top-right corner of the penalty area and curling a left-footed shot inside the far post.

Abby Wambach forced a good save from Barnhart a few minutes later as her effort from 12 yards was redirected over the net, while Wambach came within inches of leveling the match in the 66th minute when her header was tipped onto the crossbar by the 'keeper.

Danesha Adams struck the post for the Independence in the 75th minute, but she set up the second goal for Rodriguez which sealed the win.

Adams slipped a nice through ball in behind the magicJack defense for Rodriguez, who got to the edge of the area and chipped it over the head of goalkeeper Jillian Loyden and inside the right post.
