Frankfurt, Germany (Sports Network) - The United States and Japan, who will play in the Women's World Cup final Sunday, both had three players nominated for the Golden Ball Award, which is awarded to the best player in the event.
U.S. forward Abby Wambach, goalkeeper Hope Solo and midfielder/forward Lauren Cheney were among the 12 finalists. Japan had Aya Miyama, Homare Sawa, Shinobu Ohno nominated for the award
Brazil's Marta won the Golden Ball four years ago and is also a finalist. She had four goals and two assists in just four matches, and leads the Golden Boot race entering the final match.
Following are all the nominees: Brazil: Marta; France: Sonia Bompastor, Louisa Necib; Germany: Kerstin Garefrekes; Japan: Aya Miyama, Homare Sawa, Shinobu Ohno; Sweden: Caroline Seger, Lotta Schelin; United States: Hope Solo, Lauren Cheney, Abby Wambach.
