Jo-Wilfried Tsonga could be ready to challenge the Big Four.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga debuted in the professional court during the 2008 season, ranked as #43 in the world during a time where the crown was held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. His powerful hits, strength and mobility are some of the most notorious features of this French sportsman. Tsonga plays an aggressive tennis that could become more lethally effective with a bit of technique; something that he is already improving.
Tsonga is one of those players that have climbed his rank position in a very fast rate, a sacrifice that he carried with a lot of effort and injuries on the way. His talent improves with the years and has been proved with every single game he plays. Tsonga has challenged the big players of the first twenty one century decade, and has become one of the top ten during the 2011 year. Right now he dwells as the 6th seed of the ATP top list, and he may be reaching a higher rank this coming 2012. However, facing the big four is not an easy challenge; could be Tsonga ready for such a task?
I have to say that after so much time watching the same guys in the higher spots, it could become kind of habit. Tsonga brings that freshness that sometimes is needed to bring back the life of a sport like tennis. I mean, while a match among the big four Federer-Murray-Nadal-Djokovic could be really exciting; sometimes you know what to expect with a very low surprise factor; but when a player like Tsonga enter in the court, you can expect a challenge and maybe a surprising upset.
Tsonga is known for his offensive style of play, He is a power player with strong forehands, and powerful serves hat can hit 140 mph, even if his weak backhand could be a problem, he still can discharge a cannonade of bullets when needed. For someone with his body complexion, height and weight (6'2ft and 200 pounds), and a historical collection of injuries, he has a good physical condition to defy the best five tennis players in the world.
He has faced these powerful opponents before, and even when the victory has been denied, he has managed to take his toll when the conditions are presented. On a good day he can overwhelm any opponent facing him and claim the victory. Tsonga has taken at least a victory of the hands of the big four and caused some incredible upsets in more than one occasion; but when happen is not just by mere luck, these are the results of his efforts and improvements. Tsonga is one of those few talents that can take down any of the big four even when they play at their best.
Maybe he won't be among the slam favorites but certainly he will be a treat for the 2012 season and give a hell of a fight while spoiling the big guys to reach the trophy easily; it will be entertaining and that's something I really would enjoy to see.
