Great Players had it Rough

Odds & News | MK ( Tue 5th, June 2012 )

Things are getting almost as predicted so far, passing the quarterfinals with some difficulties

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic won their matches after six tough sets. Each of these great players had it rough. When everything seems to be grim enough to think that the Swiss star would fall before reaching the semis, Federer make it back and defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-0, 6-3. It was a close call for Djokovic too, Local player and top #5 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga gave a fearsome scare to the Serbian champion. The French took the lead at the second and third sets 5-7, 5-7; and almost take down Djokovic on the fourth, but Nole was able to rally back and survive the set to take down Tsonga on the fifth and final round. The match finished 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-1.

The victories for the two stars set the stage for a great semifinal match. Whoever wins will probably be set against the King of Clay Rafael Nadal by the finals. Certainly the matches have been tough for both, while Nadal has been progressing with no sweat at all and showing us why he is the favorite at Roland Garros and almost every clay court. So thinking of defeating such magnificent rival by the final match may be kind of demoralizing for those of weak mind and willpower; but that's not the case for Djokovic or Federer.

Both players have much to win, and they are focused on this goal. Clearly, Nadal will give everything he has and won't give his chance to make history as well so easily. Roger wants to add another slam to his collection, and Novak wants to make his collection of Grand Slams victories a whole, and Nadal has a strong motivation to claim his seventh title, to surpass Bjorn Borg record. History is knocking at each of these three players door, and they want to give it a warm welcome.

Federer has been playing well lately which makes him a fearsome rival and one not to be taken so lightly. "El Maestro" has defeated Djokovic in the semifinals before, just to be defeated by his nemesis Nadal at the final. The Spaniard has dominated the clay court of France in the last 6 years and it seems he wants to remain there as absolute master for a long time more. While I really want to see Djokovic take the victory at Roland Garros and complete his "Nole Slam"; this isn't going to be an easy task to achieve for the Serbian; it's well known that clay is not his best surface even if he can adapt to it. This is the fourth time that Djokovic reaches the semifinals on his career and the second consecutive year to do so at the French court. He has lost three times against Nadal and one against Federer, which put the balance against him.

With the victory against Tsonga, he has the chance to pair with Federer once more and had a fair revenge; then if he can make it, he should prepare to face the bigger challenge of all. What makes Djokovic dangerous is that if he gets enough motivational fuel, he will fight with every resource he has; and his victory against Tsonga could be a starting fire for him. Otherwise if Federer prevail, then the Swiss will need every trick and every tactic he knows to have a chance to beat super Nadal on his territory.
