Adelaide, Australia (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and two-time champion Lleyton Hewitt was among Tuesday's opening-round winners at the Adelaide International tennis event.
The former world No. 1 Hewitt handled Israeli Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Memorial Drive. Hewitt titled here in his hometown in 1998 and 2000 and was the runner-up in 1999.
Hewitt's second-round opponent will be Argentine slugger Jose Acasuso, who topped Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Day 2 here.
Second-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu got past his countryman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, while third-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen dropped Slovakian qualifier Ivo Klec 6-2, 6-4 and sixth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga outlasted Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at this Australian Open tune-up.
An upset came when American Vincent Spadea overcame eighth-seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Additional wins came for Latvian Ernests Gulbis, Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic, Russian Evgeny Korolev and last year's Adelaide runner-up, Aussie wild card Chris Guccione. Guccione, who gave way to Serbian Novak Djokovic in last year's finale, defeated American Wayne Odesnik 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) on Tuesday.
