Nadal wins; Baghdatis falls in Chennai

Chennai, India (Sports Network) - World No. 2 star Rafael Nadal won his first match of 2008, while second-seeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis came up a first-round loser at the season-opening Chennai Open tennis tournament.

The reigning three-time French Open champion and two-time Wimbledon runner-up Nadal handled France's Mathieu Montcourt 6-2, 6-4 on the hardcourts at SDAT Tennis Stadium. The top-seeded Nadal will meet American Rajeev Ram in the second round, as the qualifier Ram edged out Russian Yuri Schukin 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2) on Day 2.

The former Australian Open runner-up Baghdatis, meanwhile, bowed out against Dutchman Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4.

Three other seeds avoided upsets, as No. 3 Spaniard Carlos Moya mauled Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-1, No. 5 Frenchman Nicolas Mahut dispatched German Denis Gremelmayr 6-3, 6-3 and No. 7 Austrian Werner Eschauer outlasted Spanish wild card Bartolome Salva-Vidal 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-4. Moya titled here in 2004 and 2005 and was the runner-up in 2006.

One other upset occurred when Belgian Kristof Vliegen knocked out eighth- seeded Frenchman Marc Gicquel 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Other Day-2 wins came for Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Russian qualifier Alexandre Kudryavtsev, Croat Marin Cilic and Croatian qualifier Lovro Zovko. Kudryavtsev saved three match points before sneaking past Indian wild card Prakash Amritraj 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8).

Chennai serves as a tune-up for the Aussie Open, which will get underway in less than two weeks.
