Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ninth-seeded American James Blake was a second- round winner Friday at the $3.77 million Sony Ericsson Open -- the second of nine ATP Masters Series events this year.
Blake, a member of the United States' reigning Davis Cup championship team, handled Italian Andreas Seppi 7-5, 6-3 on Day 3 at Crandon Park.
Sixteenth-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu overcame Croat Marin Cilic 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and 22nd-seeded former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero got past fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-2, while a mild upset came when German Nicolas Kiefer grounded 25th-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-2.
Additional second-round wins came for 27th-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek, 31st- seeded Russian Igor Andreev and 32nd-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Stepanek handled French veteran Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-3.
All 32 seeds here received opening-round byes.
The 2008 Miami winner will claim $590,000.
