Monaco, Ljubicic post wins in Austria

Wed 21st, May 2008

Portschach, Austria (Sports Network) - Second-seeded and defending champion Juan Monaco was a first-round winner, while third-seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic moved into the quarterfinals at the Hypo Group International tennis tournament, a final clay-court French Open tuneup.

Monaco was leading fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq 4-1 when Berlocq retired with a right hamstring injury. Monaco, who titled here a year ago by beating Frenchman Gael Monfils in the final, will face Czech Jiri Vanek in the second round here on Thursday.

Ljubicic was a second-round winner by virtue of a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over Spaniard Ivan Navarro at Werzer Arena. Ljubicic's quarterfinal opponent will be another Spaniard, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who toppled fifth-seeded American Sam Querrey 6-1, 6-3.

Rain wreaked havoc here over the first three days of this event, but the weather did not prevent any matches from being completed on Day 4.

A pair of seeds dropped first-round matches, as Russian Igor Kunitsyn knocked out fourth-seeded American Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-1 and American Robby Ginepri erased seventh-seeded Croat Mario Ancic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). Ginepri saved two match points before ousting Ancic.

Eighth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase avoided a first-round upset by stopping Argentine Sergio Roitman 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

Additional opening-round wins came for Israeli Dudi Sela, Slovenian qualifier Blaz Kavcic and Belgian Olivier Rochus.

Also in the second round here on Thursday, top-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko will encounter 6-foot-9 American John Isner. Davydenko captured this event back-to-back in 2005 and 2006.
