Halle, Germany (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Roger Federer handled German Nicolas Kiefer in Saturday's semifinals to advance to Sunday's final at the $1.12 million Gerry Weber Open, a grass-court Wimbledon tuneup.
The Swiss Federer beat unseeded Kiefer in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 to capture his 24th straight match win at this event.
The Swiss grass-court king taught Kiefer a lesson in the art of grass court tennis. It took Federer just 22 minutes to win the first set. Federer broke in the second and sixth games to win the opening set. In the second set, Federer saved four break points in the sixth game and then broke in the ninth game before serving it out.
"I served particularly well, but returned even better and moved around the court well," said Federer.
Federer, who hasn't lost on grass since suffering a first-round setback at the hands of Croat Mario Ancic at Wimbledon back in 2002, skipped this Halle event last year after capturing the title four years in a row, from 2003-06.
The reigning five-time Wimbledon champion is fresh off his third straight runner-up finish at Roland Garros, where Rafael Nadal whipped Federer 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 in a disappointing finale in Paris.
The 26-year-old Federer improved to 11-3 lifetime against Kiefer with his 10th consecutive win over the 30-year-old. Kiefer beat Federer here in Halle in the semifinals six years ago. Since then, Federer has been on his amazing winning streak in Halle.
Federer goes into the final without losing serve this week, holding all 39 games.
Federer will face German Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday's championship. Kohlschreiber beat American James Blake 6-3, 7-5 in his semifinal match.
In their only previous meeting, Federer won 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of Halle three years ago.
