Israel advances to first Davis Cup semifinal

Tel Aviv, Israel (Sports Network) - Israel outlasted Russia in an epic five- set doubles rubber to clinch the best-of-five tie on Saturday.

Harel Levy and Dudi Sela won singles matches on Friday, then the tandem of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram helped Israel make history by securing the team's first semifinal berth in the Davis Cup.

Erlich and Ram seemed well on their way to an easy victory, winning the first two sets, but the Russian duo of two-time Grand Slam champ Marat Safin and Igor Kunitsyn battled back to take the next two sets before ultimately losing 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 4-6, 6-4.

Israel will take on the winner between Spain and Germany in September's semifinals.

Russia had beaten Israel in its only previous Davis Cup matchup back in the 1984 European Zone final.
