Spain grabs lead in Davis Cup

Sat 11th, July 2009

Marbella, Spain (Sports Network) - Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez defeated Germany's tandem of Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 in Saturday's doubles rubber in a Davis Cup quarterfinal matchup.

Spain leads the best-of-five tie, 2-1.

Sunday's critical reverse singles are slated to pit Verdasco against Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tommy Robredo versus Andreas Beck of Germany.

Spain, the defending Davis Cup champ, is playing without injured superstar Rafael Nadal, who also missed Wimbledon because of knee problems. The Spaniards have won 15 straight home Davis Cup ties.

Germany leads the all-time Davis Cup series with Spain, 9-5, but the Spaniards have won three of the last four meetings. That includes a 4-1 victory in last year's quarterfinals in Bremen.

The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will take on Israel in September's semifinals.
