London, England (Sports Network) - Nikolay Davydenko captured the ATP World Finals title on Sunday by knocking off Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets.
Davydenko earned the 6-3, 6-4 decision over the reigning U.S. Open champ for his 19th career title and fifth this year. The Russian went unbeaten in finals this year with previous wins at Hamburg, Umag, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai.
"I think it's amazing," Davydenko said of his victory. "[In the] history of the [Finals], for my name to be there is something amazing for me."
Del Potro, who knocked off Robin Soderling in the semifinals, was vying for his eighth career crown and fourth in 2009, but the Argentine lost all three break chances in the final to fall just short.
"He plays like PlayStation. He runs down everything," del Potro said of Davydenko. "It is very difficult to hit winners. But I think he is a great champion."
Davydenko lost to Novak Djokovic in the finals of this event last year but advanced to the semis via a set-tiebreaker over the Serbian in Group B round- robin play. Davydenko then ended a 12-match losing to world No. 1 Roger Federer in a three-set semifinal battle.
On Sunday, he won an early break and held serve to take a relatively quick first set. With the score tied, 4-4, in the second, del Potro lost his serve at love and Davydenko served out the match.
In the doubles final, Bob and Mike Bryan upended Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, capturing their third title in the event and reclaiming the year- end No. 1 doubles ranking.
"To come full circle, do it in the last tournament, with so much riding on this one match, it's huge," Mike Bryan said. "We're going to be talking about this match for the rest of our lives. There's nothing sweeter than this."
