Nadal will open for Spain in Davis Cup final

Thu 3rd, December 2009

Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal will open up for defending champion Spain versus the visiting Czech Republic in this week's best-of-five Davis Cup final at Palau Sant Jordi.

Spain, which had never titled prior to the 2000s, is seeking its' fourth title this decade.

Friday's opening singles in Barcelona will pit the Australian Open titlist Nadal against Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer versus Czech Radek Stepanek. Ferrer will play instead of world No. 9 Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Saturday's doubles rubber will have Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez facing a Czech tandem of Lukas Dlouhy and Jan Hajek, while Sunday's reverse singles currently call for Nadal to meet Stepanek and Ferrer to battle Berdych on the indoor red clay here.

Spain is captained by former French Open champ Albert Costa, while the Czech Republic is piloted by Jaroslav Navratil.

The six-time Grand Slam event champion Nadal missed last year's Davis Cup final in Argentina due to a knee injury, as Spain went on the road to defeat the favored Argentines, 3-1. The Mallorcan superstar has battled knee and abdominal injuries this year, with knee problems preventing him from defending his title at Wimbledon this past summer.

The 23-year-old Nadal is 12-1 in his career Davis Cup singles rubbers, with his only loss coming in his Davis Cup debut against the Czechs' Jiri Novak, back in 2004.

Spain, appearing in its' seventh Davis Cup final (3-3), is 3-2 all-time versus the Czechs. The Spaniards are looking to become the first repeat Davis Cup champ since Sweden turned the trick 11 years ago.

The Spaniards have won their last 17 home ties and have rattled off 19 straight victories on their beloved clay.

The Czechs will appear in their first title tilt since an Ivan Lendl-led Czechoslovakia captured its' lone title back in 1980.
