Santiago, Chile (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina took an opening-round victory from Chile's Nicolas Massu on Monday at the $450,000 Movistar Open tennis event.
Monaco was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Massu, who was representing the host country at this clay-court tournament. Monaco will face fellow countryman Juan Ignacio Chela in the second round after Chela bested Chilean wild card Jorge Aguilar 7-5, 6-2 in first-round action.
Other opening-round matches saw Aussie Peter Luczak upend eighth-seeded Italian Potito Starace 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, while Spaniard Marcel Granollers was tied with Martin Vassallo Arguello 4-6, 6-3 when the Argentine retired with a left ankle injury.
Also on Monday, Spaniard Alberto Martin got by Brazil's Marcos Daniel in a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-4 final.
This week's top seed is long-time Chilean favorite Fernando Gonzalez, who will open his 2010 stay against Spaniard Oscar Hernandez. "Gonzo" is the two-time reigning and a four-time champion at this event. He beat Argentine Jose Acasuso in last year's finale in Vina del Mar, where he also titled in 2002, 2004 and 2008.
The '10 Movistar winner will collect $68,450.
