Ferrero, Bellucci move on at Brasil Open

Costa do Sauipe, Brazil (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and hometown favorite Thomaz Bellucci were first-round winners Tuesday at the $500,000 Brasil Open.

The former world No. 1 Ferrero beat Argentine Eduardo Schwank 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on the red clay at Costa do Sauipe-Salvador. Ferrero was a finalist at this event in 2007.

Last week's titlist in Santiago, the third-seeded Bellucci posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over fellow Brazil native Thiago Alves. Bellucci was last year's Costa do Sauipe runner-up to Ferrero.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Russian Igor Andreev handled Italian Potito Starace 6-2, 6-2, fifth-seeded Romanian Victor Hanescu defeated Brazilian Joao Souza 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and Pablo Cuevas, the sixth seed, topped Italian Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-3.

Spaniard Marcel Granollers advanced to the second round after a hip injury forced seventh-seeded Argentine Horacio Zeballos to retire from the match while trailing 7-5, 3-0.

Former Brasil Open champion Nicolas Massu of Chile moved on with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Brazilian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Silva. Massu captured this event in 2006.

Other Day-2 wins came for Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, Brazilian Ricardo Hocevar, Portuguese Frederico Gil, qualifier Rui Machado, Italian Fabio Fognini and Pole Lukasz Kubot.

The 2010 Brasil Open titlist will pocket $75,700.
