Haas and Querrey winners in San Jose

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Fourth-seeded German Tommy Haas and seventh- seeded American Sam Querrey were both first-round winners Tuesday at the $600,000 SAP Open.

Haas topped American wild card Devin Britton, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), while Querrey beat Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-3, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at HP Pavilion.

Sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany topped American Rajeev Ram, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 6-3. German Bjorn Phau upset eighth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-1.

In other Day-2 play, Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis bounced American Robby Ginepri 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3, German Benjamin Becker leveled American qualifier Tim Smyczek 6-4, 6-2, and American Michael Russell took down South Korean Kyu Tae Im, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

Mardy Fish, who was last year's San Jose runner-up to Czech Radek Stepanek and was this week's third seed, pulled out of the tournament due to a left knee injury. He was replaced by Im in the draw.

This week's top seeds are American Andy Roddick and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. Roddick is a three-time San Jose titlist (2004, 2005 and 2008).

The 2010 San Jose champ will collect $90,925.
