Varazdin, Croatia (Sports Network) - Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic were a pair of opening singles winners, as host Croatia pounced on Ecuador for a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five Davis Cup first-round affair.
The 6-foot-10 Karlovic got the hosts going by sneaking past veteran Nicolas Lapentti 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4 in 3 hours, 45 minutes on an indoor hardcourt at Varazdin's Gradska Sportska Dvorana. The massive-serving Karlovic slammed 36 aces and had his serve broken only once by the 33-year-old Lapentti.
Karlovic set the all-time record for aces in a match by crushing 78 in a five- set loss to Czech Radek Stepanek in a Davis Cup semifinal last year.
The world No. 9 Cilic made it 2-0 Croatia on Day 1 by peppering Lapentti's younger brother Giovanni, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
Croatia, which is captained by Goran Prpic and captured its lone Davis Cup title in 2005, can clinch the win here on Saturday when its doubles tandem of Ivan Dodig and Antonio Veic faces the Lapentti brothers.
Heavy underdog Ecuador, in the World Group for the first time in nine years, is captained by Raul Viver.
The winner here will face the Serbia-United States victor in the quarterfinals in July.
