Russia leads India 2-0 in Davis Cup first-rounder

Fri 5th, March 2010

Moscow, Russia (Sports Network) - Host Russia got singles wins Friday from Igor Kunitsyn and Mikhail Youzhny, as the Russians lead India 2-0 in their best-of-five Davis Cup first-round tie at Luzhniki.

Kunitsyn got the hosts going on Day 1 with a hard-fought 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Indian Somdev Devvarman and Youzhny then doubled the hosts' lead with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 pasting of Rohan Bopanna on the indoor hardcourt at Small Sports Arena.

The Russians can advance to the quarterfinals with a doubles victory here on Saturday, as a home tandem of Kunitsyn and Teimuraz Gasbashvili take on an Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Two-time champion Russia (2002, 2006) is captained by Shamil Tarpischev, while Team India, which is making its first appearance in the World Group since 1998, is guided by Shiv-Prakash Misra.

Surprisingly, India is 2-1 all-time against Russia in Davis Cup play. The Indians won their last meeting, back in 1986.

The Russia-India winner will face the Argentina-Sweden victor in July.
