Bhupathi and Paes keep India alive against Russia

Moscow, Russia (Sports Network) - The dynamic doubles team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leader Paes kept India alive in its Davis Cup first-round tie against Russia with a straight-set victory Saturday.

Bhupathi and Paes notched a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over the Russian tandem of Igor Kunitsyn and Teimuraz Gabashvili. India still trails the best-of-five tie, 2-1.

Kunitsyn and Youzhny each won singles matches Friday to give the host nation a commanding advantage and the Russians need to win just one of Sunday's two reverse singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Russians faced a daunting task to clinch the tie Saturday, as Bhupathi and Paes are among the top doubles teams in tennis. The two have combined for 10 Grand Slam titles and on Saturday needed just 96 minutes to dispose of Kunitsyn and Gabashvili.

Youzhny, a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 winner over Rohan Bopanna on Friday, will have the first chance to wrap up the tie for the Russians on Sunday when he takes on Somdev Devvarman. Kunitsyn, who came back from a set down to beat Devvarman on Friday, is then scheduled to face Bopanna in the fifth rubber.

Two-time champion Russia (2002, 2006) is captained by Shamil Tarpischev, while Team India, which is making its first appearance in the World Group since 1998, is guided by Shiv-Prakash Misra.

Surprisingly, India is 2-1 all-time against Russia in Davis Cup play. The Indians won their last meeting, back in 1986.

The Russia-India winner will face the Argentina-Sweden victor in July.
