Toulon, France (Sports Network) - France and Germany split a pair of dead rubbers on Sunday, as the French finished off a 4-1 victory in a first-round Davis Cup matchup.
France should have its hands full with two-time defending champion Spain in July's quarterfinals.
On Sunday, German Simon Greul bested flashy Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-2, 1-0, retired, and Julien Benneteau handled German Benjamin Becker 6-2, 7-5.
The French clinched the best-of-five tie here on Saturday, when Benneteau and Michael Llodra beat a German tandem of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Christopher Kas 6-1, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in the doubles encounter.
In Friday's opening singles in Toulon, the hosts got singles wins from Gael Monfils and Tsonga to grab a commanding 2-0 lead on the indoor hardcourt at the Sports Palace.
France is now 6-2 all-time against three-time titlist Germany in a series that dates back to 1913. This marked their first meeting in four years.
The nine-time Davis Cup champion French are captained by Guy Forget, while Patrik Kuhnen led the German squad.
