Rome, Italy (Sports Network) - Four-time champion Rafael Nadal outlasted Ernests Gulbis to secure a spot in Sunday's final at the $2.97 million Italian Masters, the fourth of nine Masters events on the ATP World Tour this year.
The third-seeded Nadal dropped his first set but still managed to post a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over the rising Latvian.
Nadal, who improved to 26-1 lifetime in Rome, will play for his 17th career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title and aim to tie all-time leader Andre Agassi.
Standing in his way is fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who overcame a slow start to beat countryman Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday's first semifinal.
Verdasco raced out to a 5-1 lead before dropping six straight games to hand the 13th-seeded Ferrer the opening set. The sixth-seeded Verdasco had reached the final of his last two tournaments, losing to Nadal in Monte Carlo two weeks ago and dispatching Swede Robin Soderling to capture the title in Barcelona last weekend.
Ferrer, who had lost three straight to Verdasco, leads the ATP with 23 clay- court wins this season.
Nadal will carry a 10-3 career advantage over Ferrer, winning the past six meetings. This marks the second time the two Spaniards will meet in a Rome final. The former No. 1 Nadal topped Ferrer to win the title in 2005, the first of his four championships at this event.
