Umag, Croatia (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko and last year's runner-up Juan Carlos Ferrero were a pair of second-round winners at the clay-court Croatia Open.
The speedy Russian Davydenko drubbed Frenchman Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-2 in a mere 53 minutes on Wednesday. The Russian compiled four service breaks, while holding his serve throughout the predictable rout.
The world No. 6 Davydenko's quarterfinal opponent will be Argentine veteran Juan Ignacio Chela.
The fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Ferrero, meanwhile, had to claw his way past Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in 2 hours, 9 minutes at ITC Stella Maris. The Spanish Ferrero, a former French Open champ, gave way to Davydenko in last year's Umag finale.
Ferrero's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be rising Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.
In other second-round action, a sixth-seeded Dolgopolov handled Croatian wild card Franco Skugor 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 and an eighth-seeded Chela fought off game Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 in 2 hours, 42 minutes.
