Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Sports Network) - French Open runner-up Robin Soderling and Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych were a pair of quarterfinal upset victims Friday at the Malaysian Open tennis event.
The top-seeded world No. 5 Soderling was stunned by eighth-seeded Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2, while the third-seeded world No. 7 Berdych was ousted by fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourts at Putra Stadium.
Soderling fell in 71 minutes, as he was unable to break Golubev's serve while his Kazakhstani counterpart tallied four breaks in the upset. Berdych succumbed in 2 hours, 28 minutes, as Ferrer had one more break (3-2) than his Czech opponent in their round-of-eight affair.
Ferrer and Golubev will square off in the semifinals here on Saturday.
Fourth-seeded U.S. Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny avoided an upset by coming from behind to best sixth-seeded former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-1. Youzhny was down a set and 2-4 before mounting a comeback on Day 5.
The Russian Youzhny will face his compatriot Igor Andreev in the other semi, as the qualifier Andreev got past Canadian qualifier Milos Raonic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The winner of this $947,750 event will collect $165,500.
