Hometown great Federer wins Basel opener

Basel, Switzerland (Sports Network) - Swiss icon and Basel native Roger Federer was an easy first-round winner Monday at the $1.7 million Swiss Indoors.

The top-seeded former world No. 1 Federer, a titlist in Stockholm two weeks ago, was leading Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 5-2 when the Ukrainian retired from the match after 51 minutes of tennis on the indoor hardcourts at St. Jakobshalle. Dolgopolov injured his right ankle while chasing down a return on Day 1.

The 29-year-old Federer, who used to serve as a ball boy at this event, dropped only four points on serve Monday.

The 16-time major champion Federer captured his hometown Basel tournament from 2006-08 and was upset by Novak Djokovic in last year's finale here.

Eighth-seeded American John Isner came from behind to reach the second round with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over French lefty Michael Llodra on Monday, while one other match saw Dutch qualifier Robin Haase handle Swiss wild card Stephane Bohli 6-4, 6-3. Isner and Haase will meet in the round of 16 here.

This week's Basel field also features the reigning champion and U.S. Open runner-up Djokovic, Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych and former world No. 1 Andy Roddick. Djokovic will open defense of his title against Latvian Ernests Gulbis on Tuesday.

Last week's Vienna champion Jurgen Melzer and Montpellier runner-up Ivan Ljubicic, this week's fifth and seventh seeds, respectively, pulled out of the draw here in Basel.
