Nalbandian, Baghdatis advance; Hewitt exits London

Tue 12th, June 2012

London, England (Sports Network) - Tenth seed David Nalbandian and 11th- seeded Marcos Baghdatis posted wins, while four-time titlist Lleyton Hewitt came up an opening-round loser Tuesday at the $785,000 Aegon Championships.

The former Wimbledon runner-up Nalbandian overcame Canada's Vasek Pospisil 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, while the former Australian Open runner-up Baghdatis held off Portugal's Frederico Gil 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2 on the grass courts at London's Queen's Club, which hosts this Wimbledon tuneup.

The unseeded former world No. 1 Hewitt was sent packing by 16th-seeded 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic, 6-3, 6-2. The massive-serving Karlovic pumped 22 aces past the helpless two-time major champion Hewitt, who titled at The Queen's Club from 2000-02 and again in 2006.

The fading Aussie star entered as a wild card this week.

In other action involving seeds, No. 9 South African Kevin Anderson overcame British wild card James Ward 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; No.12 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan topped French qualifier Kenny De Schepper 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); No. 13 Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. bested Slovak Martin Klizan 6-2, 7-6 (7-5); No. 14 Gilles Muller of Luxembourg leveled British wild card Liam Broady 6-2, 6-1; and No. 15 Japanese Go Soeda subdued German Bjorn Phau 6-2, 6-2.

Several other men reached the second round in London, including Americans Ryan Sweeting and Sam Querrey, France's Nicolas Mahut, and Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse. The lucky-loser Sweeting beat Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), while Querrey outlasted Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

Rain washed out Monday's schedule in London.

On Wednesday, top-seeded and defending champion Andy Murray will face Mahut, while second-seeded 2011 runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will take on Brit Jamie Baker. The two-time Queen's Club champion Murray beat the former Aussie Open runner-up Tsonga in last year's marquee finale here.

Also seeing action on Day 3 will be seventh-seeded four-time Queen's Club champ Andy Roddick, who will open his week against France's Edouard Roger- Vasselin.
