Auckland, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russians Vera Zvonareva and Maria Kirilenko highlighted Tuesday's opening-round winners at the $145,000 ASB Classic tennis tournament.
Zvonareva zipped past wild card Sacha Jones, of New Zealand, 6-0, 6-1, while Kirilenko outlasted Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on the hardcourts at ASB Tennis Centre. Zvonareva was last year's runner-up here to Serbian Jelena Jankovic.
Up next for Zvonareva will be Swede Sofia Arvidsson, while Kirilenko will encounter Czech Klara Zakopalova on Wednesday.
Another seeded victor was No. 7 Eleni Daniilidou, as the Greek grounded British qualifier Elena Baltacha 6-1, 6-2, while an upset came when Italian Sara Errani erased fourth-seeded Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Other Day-2 wins came for the aforementioned Arvidsson, wild card and New Zealander Marina Erakovic and Frenchwomen Aravane Rezai, Pauline Parmentier and Camille Pin.
