Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Russian Maria Sharapova has pulled out of next week's Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, citing a shoulder injury.
Sharapova, who had an 18-match win streak broken by Svetlana Kuznetsova on Friday night in the Indian Wells semifinals, advised tournament officials of her decision Saturday.
"We certainly wish Maria a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return to the court quickly," said Tournament Director Adam Barrett. "I know our fans will miss watching her on the court but I know she still plans on coming to Miami so they will still have the opportunity to see her on site and around town."
Sharapova will apparently face a stiff fine for missing the mandatory event.
The 2008 Sony Ericsson Open will be played March 26 - April 6 at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. The 12-day event is set to feature the top men's and women's players in the world, including defending champion Serena Williams, who is looking to capture the title for the fifth time in seven years.
