Sharapova, Jankovic, Kuznetsova reach fourth round in Paris

Sat 31st, May 2008

Paris, France (Sports Network) - World No. 1 Maria Sharapova, third-seeded Jelena Jankovic, and 2006 French Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova highlighted Saturday's third-round winners at Roland Garros.

The Australian Open titlist Sharapova got past 32nd-seeded Italian Karin Knapp 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 to improve to a flawless 10-0 in her Grand Slam matches this year. The three-time major champion needs the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam.

Sharapova's fourth-round opponent will be 13th-seeded fellow Russian Dinara Safina.

Meanwhile, Jankovic handled 28th-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-3 and a fourth-seeded Kuznetsova crushed 25th-seeded fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 6-2, 6-1. Jankovic was leading Cibulkova 7-5, 4-2 here on Friday when played was called due to darkness. The Serbian came out on Saturday and promptly won two of three games to setup a meeting with rising 14th-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska, who's fresh off her clay-court title in Istanbul.

Kuznetsova is a former U.S. Open champion, was last year's U.S. Open runner- up, and lost to Justine Henin in the French Open finale two years ago. The sturdy Russian will meet Belarusian teenager Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16.

Seventh-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva dropped Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-0, 6-4, while 11th-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva zipped past Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-2, 6-2. Dementieva, last week's runner-up in Istanbul, reached a pair of Grand Slam finals back in 2004, including one here at the French Open. Dementieva will tangle with Zvonareva in the next round.

In other third-round action, Czech Petra Kvitova upended 12th-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-2; the aforementioned Safina stopped Chinese qualifier Jie Zheng 6-2, 7-5; a 16th-seeded Azarenka dismantled 18th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-1; and Estonian Kaia Kanepi upset 29th- seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, last week's titlist in Strasbourg, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 on Day 7 of this clay-court major. The 18-year-old Azarenka has dropped only six games through her first three matches of this fortnight. The 18-year-old Kvitova and Kanepi will meet in a surprise fourth- rounder.

No less than five Russians reached the fourth round in the top half of the women's draw on Saturday.

The fourth round will commence with four matches here on Sunday, including ones for second-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic and Jankovic. The Australian and French Open runner-up Ivanovic will face Czech Petra Cetkovska, while Jankovic will take on Radwanska.

Other Day-8 bouts will pit 10th-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder against 27th- seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik and 26th-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta versus Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. Srebotnik, who was last week's runner-up in Strasbourg, shocked Serena Williams, while Pennetta stunned Venus Williams here on Friday.
