Ivanovic, Jankovic advance to quarterfinals in Paris

Sun 1st, June 2008

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Ana Ivanovic and third- seeded Jelena Jankovic both won their respective matches on Sunday in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

The 20-year-old Serb rolled past unseeded Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-0, 6-0 in just 54 minutes. Ivanovic, the Australian and last year's French Open runner- up, played a near perfect contest, ripping her forehand, serving big and with variety, keeping her backhand steady and jumping on her inexperienced foe's second serves.

"It was much tougher than it probably looked," Ivanovic said. "I had to work really hard, and I played almost without mistake today. She's a good player, and she started first game well and she had a lot of chances afterwards in the second set. But I stepped up and I was really playing my game and really making really few unforced errors."

This was the second love-love result of the women's tournament, and Ivanovic's first such victory since May 2005.

Ivanovic's stellar play thus far shows she is determined to capture her first major title. She has dropped only 15 games through her first four matches and has yet to lose a set.

Ivanovic will face 10th-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder in the quarterfinals. The 29-year-old Schnyder beat Katrina Srebotnik in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the final women's match of the day.

Schnyder's forehand and six aces were too much for Srebotnik. Slovenian Srebotnik committed 36 unforced errors in the loss. Srebotnik made her mark at this year's French Open when shocked Serena Williams on Friday.

Schnyder and Ivanovic have met seven times before, with Schnyder holding a 4-3 advantage including four-straight wins for the Swiss.

Jankovic handled 14th-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in her fourth-round match. Jankovic twice received treatment on her shoulder, lost four consecutive games after reaching match point, and still managed to win.

Jankovic suffered a right forearm injury in the tournament. She blamed her shoulder pain on the swelling in her right forearm.

"I think the other muscles are compensating, so the whole arm is a mess," Jankovic said.

Radwanska committed five unforced errors in the tiebreaker, including an errant backhand to end a 28-stroke rally on the final point.

The 23-year-old Serb, also in search of her first Grand Slam title, will face Spanish qualifier Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarterfinals.

Suarez Navarro stunned Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2 in her fourth-round match on Sunday. Suarez Navarro, making her French Open debut, made a name for herself in this year's women's tournament when she sent two-time major titlist Amelie Mauresmo packing in the second round. That was Mauresmo's earliest exit at the French Open since 2001 when she lost in the first round.

The 19-year-old Suarez Navarro became the first qualifier since 2001 to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

This will be the first meeting between Jankovic and Suarez Navarro.

The fourth round will conclude here on Monday, including ones for world No. 1 Maria Sharapova and 2006 French Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova. Sharapova will face 13th-seeded Dinara Safina, while Kuznetsova will take on 16th-seeded Victoria Azarenka.

Other Day-9 bouts will pit 7th-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva against fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva and Czech Petra Kvitova will play Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in a battle of unseeded players.
