Radwanska outlasts Petrova in Eastbourne final

Sat 21st, June 2008

Eastbourne, England (Sports Network) - Rising star Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland ousted eighth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova in three sets to capture the $600,000 International Women's Open, a final Wimbledon tuneup.

The fourth-seeded Radwanska took down the 26-year-old Petrova 6-4, 6-7 (11-13), 6-4 in a tightly-contested battle that lasted a little over two hours and 30 minutes. The victory was Radwanska's first-ever title on grass. She collected $95,500 with the victory.

"I am very happy after today," Radwanska said. "This is my best result on the Tour so far. I have had a good run this year, and I am slowly making my way up to the rankings. First, my goal was Top 30, then Top 20, and now I am aiming at top 10, but I just had a good week and I am very happy to win my first Tier II."

The 19-year-old Radwanska improved to 4-0 in her career finals, including wins in Pattaya City and Istanbul already this year. The Polish Radwanska now holds three titles this year, which ties Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams for the most titles this season on the WTA Tour.

In a match where both players struggled to hold serve, Radwanska broke three straight times to go up 4-2 in the first set. She failed to serve out the set when leading 5-3, but broke back again with a forehand winner.

Petrova broke to lead 2-1 in the second before Radwanska made it 4-4. In the tiebreaker, Radwanska missed three match points before Petrova evened the match on her fourth set point.

In the decider, Radwanska broke for a 5-4 lead when Petrova made a forehand error, and then closed the match on her fifth match point.

Petrova was treated before the match for strained right calf and during the final set for an ailing left hip. Radwanska struggled with cramps in the third set.

This was Petrova's first finals appearance of the year. Her last finals appearance came last year in Los Angeles. She dropped to 7-9 in her title matches.

Wimbledon starts this Monday, June 23rd. Petrova will take on Olga Govortsova, while Radwanska will play Iveta Benesova in the first round.
