Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and fourth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina will meet in the next round of the $600,000 East West Bank Classic after their quarterfinal victories on Friday.
Ninth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova gave Jankovic all she could handle, but the Serb slipped past for a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Safina, meanwhile, had little trouble with eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 trouncing.
The other semifinal match will pit wildcard Bethanie Mattek against 10th- seeded Flavia Pennetta.
Mattek, a Florida native, dispatched of Yuan Meng of China in a 6-2, 7-5 battle.
Pennetta needed all three sets to get by 14th-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria. After winning the first-set tiebreaker, Pennetta dropped the second before overwhelming her opponent in the third set to come away with the 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-1 win.
2008 Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams pulled out of the event on Tuesday due to a left knee injury.
